Annually, Rhode Island Black Storytellers (RIBS) presents FUNDA FEST: A Celebration of Black Storytelling. This much anticipated and highly visible event is the flagship RIBS program and reaches a statewide audience of several thousand. The week-long celebration presents a variety of performances and workshops throughout the state of Rhode Island, from school performances for K-12 to intergenerational and family workshops, to evening spoken word and storytelling concerts for adult audiences.

Blk Grrrl Book Fair is an annual event that promotes writing, feminism and veganism. Their goal is to document and empower the women and girl experience of people who are members of the African diaspora and living or have lived on the East Coast of the United States.

African American Children’s Book Fair, Philadelphia, PA
The African American Children’s Book Fair is one of the oldest and largest single-day events for African-American children’s books in the country, with an average yearly attendance of more than 3,500. The event features nationally known bestselling authors/illustrators, many of whom have won some of the most prestigious American Library Association awards including the Coretta Scott King Award. These authors/illustrators have produced some of the best books of our generation.

ALA Midwinter Meeting, Denver, CO
The ALA Midwinter Meeting features more than 200 Discussion Groups—loosely organized sessions on broad and timely topics, each sponsored by an ALA division, round table, or office. Experts offer the latest updates on policy, research, statistics, technology, and more in these sessions, based on new research, surveys, reports, legislation/regulation, projects, beta trials, focus groups, and other data.

RomFest Africa, Lagos, Nigeria, Africa
Romance Booklovers Festival is West Africa’s first romance book-industry event featuring writer/industry seminars, reader/book events, as well as the Ufere Awards Dinner gala. The events are designed to entertain as well as inform. Attendees will meet fellow book lovers, make new friends, have fun with authors, and learn about the industry.

Onyxcon is a convention, festival, and celebration that promotes, showcases, educates, and entertains all fans of the Sequential Arts and related media. They feature independent and legendary creators of comics, books, film, and other media with a focus on African Diaspora culture, concepts, interests, and general markets. The event is for everyone, and is a progressive and diverse networking event for professionals as well as enthusiasts who appreciate the showcase. Because comic books/comic strips have long stood as the foundation Art form of this type of convention, comics are a major feature, but Onyxcon is not limited to comic books. The event highlights other literary genres like speculative fiction, as well as video games, collectable toys and models, films/documentaries, and all other media related to the Popular Arts.

Kingston Book Festival, Kingston, Jamaica, W.I.
The Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ) annually hosts the Kingston Book Festival (KBF). This year’s hosting of the Kingston Book Festival is intended to highlight the success of Jamaican literature in the international arena in the last year and to use this momentum to expand the potential and work of Jamaica’s authors, publishing houses, bookstores and local libraries. As with previous iterations of the festival, the fourth annual staging also seeks to promote reading among adults and children, build awareness of Jamaican books and strengthen capacity of the local industry in a fun, festive environment. The Festival also aims to showcase Kingston’s rich and vibrant culture and to position the city as a major hub in the regional publishing and arts community.

The 58th Annual New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, New York, NY
Over 200 American and international dealers will exhibit at The ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, bringing a vast selection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, illuminated manuscripts and ephemera. The diversity of specialties includes art, medicine, literature, photography, autographs, first editions, Americana, and much more.

Tucson Festival of Books, Tucson, AZ
The Tucson Festival of Books debuted March 14-15, 2009, on the campus of The University of Arizona. The Festival featured 450 authors and presenters and welcomed 50,000 regional visitors, all made possible with generous support from our sponsors and the energetic goodwill of 800 volunteers. This year’s festival will be held March 10-11th, and the mascot will be the coyote.

Virginia Festival of the Book, Charlottesville, VA
The Virginia Festival of the Book brings together writers and readers to promote and celebrate books, reading, literacy, and literary culture over five days in Charlottesville each March. The Festival is the largest community-based book event in the Mid-Atlantic region and has attracted audiences of more than 20,000 for each of the past thirteen years.

The Write Stuff Writers Conference, Bethlehem, PA
The conference features interactive sessions with authors, editors and agents. It hosts thirty great events over three days. It’s intimate atmosphere makes it easy for attendees and faculty to meet and mingle. The conference is designed to be inclusive by encouraging participants to share ideas, pose questions, and make connections with others who share the passion for writing. Seminars address a variety of relevant topics and include: Mastering Suspense, Structure and Plot; Using Metaphors to Add Richness and Texture to Your Work; and A Marathon, Not a Sprint: Long-Term Marketing Strategies for Indies. Attendees can receive immediate feedback on a sample of their work at the Friday evening Page Cuts Critique Sessions.

National Black Writers Conference, Brooklyn, NY
The theme of the 14th National Black Writers Conference (NBWC) “Gathering at the Waters: Healing, Legacy, and Activism in Black Literature” acknowledges our concern about the recent, and still continued, issues of social inequality and injustices that challenge us and builds on the legacy of healing through activism. This timely theme centers on the ways in which Black writers use their writing to explore and convey messages that heal and restore our individual selves and collective community. The Conference will also examine the instrumental role that Black writers have played in building our cultural history; the imprint that this has left in Black literature; and how the literature of Black writers has impacted present-day and future generations. And lastly, we will also look at the significance of activism in writers’ works, that is how a writer’s beliefs and personal vigorous action are used to support the political and social change they want to see take place in today’s society and in the world. A major strand of the Conference will be a series of panels focused on “Community Conversations on Race, Resistance, & Activism.”

The Venice Book Fair and Writers Festival is a unique event, featuring a day of presentations about writing and publishing, and a day when writers sell and sign their books from tents in Centennial Park. The Friday Writers Festival features a wine and cheese reception to meet the guest speakers. The Saturday Book Fair is adjacent to the Venice Farmers Market in downtown Venice.

Our theme this year is “Uncovering Mysteries”. No matter your age or interest, Norwescon strives to make sure there is always something appealing to do over the four days of the convention. Our programming department schedules hundreds of hours of panel programming covering a myriad of subjects. Whether you’re looking for writer’s workshops, costuming tips, artistic creativity, musical concerts, or deep dives into any number of science fiction, fantasy and science topics, you’ll find it here! We also feature a number of special events over the course of the weekend. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night each feature a DJ’d dance in the grand ballrooms with pop and fan favorites old and new, or you can kick back with our midnight movies. Open and scheduled gaming runs throughout the weekend. Try to get the drop on your friends during our Lazer Tag games. Friday features an 18-and-over special event. And, of course, there’s the Masquerade, complete with Children’s Masquerade. Arts, artists, and artistry of all kinds are also large part of Norwescon. You’ll find plenty to tease the eyes (and tempt your pocketbook) from our many exhibitors in the Art Show, at Art in Action, and in our Dealers’ Room.

Founded in 2006 as the Dallas International Book Festival, the 2018 Dallas Book Festival will mark the twelfth anniversary of the Dallas Public Library’s premiere literary event. The Dallas Book Festival is a community-based literary event promoting reading, literacy, and writing and featuring over 100 local, regional and national authors. Activities include writing workshops, story times and activities for children, and music and dance performances. This year the Dallas Book Festival is being held in conjunction with the Dallas Festival of Ideas to create a unique, unprecedented event in downtown Dallas.

San Antonio Book Festival, San Antonio, TX
The San Antonio Book Festival celebrates national and local authors and their contributions to the culture of literacy, ideas, and imagination. The free, daylong event is a gift to visitors and the citizens of San Antonio, bringing books to life through author presentations, innovative panel discussions, and book sales and signings. Also included in this fun day of literary entertainment are family activities such as children’s theater performances, a technology area, interactive play and art stations, and a selection of the city’s famous food trucks. SABF, which generates more than $1 million for the city’s economy, is the signature program of the San Antonio Public Library Foundation.

The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. In 2018, LBF will celebrate its 47-year anniversary. PEN World Voices Festival, New York, NY
PEN World Voices is America’s only international literary festival, attracting the best known writers from across the globe. Since our founding, we have presented more than 1,500 writers and artists from 118 countries speaking 56 languages in venues across New York City in a weeklong series of literary events with a human rights focus. The Festival was founded by Salman Rushdie, Esther Allen, and Michael Roberts in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, with the aim of broadening channels of dialogue between the United States and the world—a mission that, today, has never been more relevant.

The annual Essay and Short Story contest, in partnership with Bethesda Magazine, will honor local writers. Adult top prize winners will receive $500 and be published in Bethesda Magazine’s July/August issue. Young adult (ages 14-17) winners will receive $250 and also be published in Bethesda Magazine. The annual Poetry Contest will award $350 to the top poem that will also be published on The Writer’s Center’s “First Person Plural” blog. Up to three young poets will also be selected and receive $75. Additional prize money will also be given to second, third and honorable mention places.

The mission of the New Orleans Poetry Festival and Small Press Fair is to create a space for an inclusive and diverse group of writers to collaborate, share and influence each other while also being immersed in the distinct literary culture of New Orleans. As such, our goal every year is to bring in poets and performers from across the globe to share their work and research in topics not only specific to writing but to cultural, political and activist needs relevant to the current climate. We also hope to showcase the best writers that New Orleans has to offer allowing visitors to partake in the writing spirit unique to our city. The Festival is highly participatory with events ranging from workshops where you will be generating writing to open mics where you can share your work to getting out on the dance floor to listen and dance to our poets with bands. We invite the active inspiration of saturation in four days of poetry along with the collaboration of creating a temporary autonomous zone for fostering further explorations and creations that continue beyond the time spent here in New Orleans.

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: to bring together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. The Great American Book Festival was created by the founders of Literary Classics Book Awards & Reviews. In an effort to support the literary arts, Literary Classics Book Awards and Reviews has created the Great American Book Festival. To be held annually, this event has become home to the Literary Classics Book Awards and related events, and will be held in conjunction with a book festival. The Great American Book Festival is slated to be held each year on Labor Day weekend. The festival is open to the public and authors from all genres are invited to participate along with related vendors and food purveyors.

Go On Girl! Book Club Author Awards Weekend, Indianapolis, IN
Each year winning authors are selected from our reading list based upon votes from each Go On Girl! Book Club chapter for Author of the Year and New Author of the Year. They are then invited to receive their awards in person at the annual Awards Ceremony. This flagship event is one of the ways of expressing their deep authentic respect for Black literature and authors, reinvigorating their literary sisterhood, and providing a platform for new literary talent to emerge.

BookCon is the event where storytelling and pop culture collide. Experience the origin of the story in all its forms by interacting with the authors, publishers, celebrities and creators of content that influence everything we read, hear and see. AAMBC which stands for African Americans on the Move Book Club was created in February 2008 by a then twenty-year-old, Tamika Newhouse. What started as an online book club grew into a national Phenomenon. The sole purpose was to expose the unknown writer and to give them the opportunity to win accolades. A tradition still highly expressed to this very date, AAMBC still caters to the unknown writer. They have single handedly worked with thousands of writers’ new, seasoned, and celebrities. From first time writers to nationally known they have consistently set the tone to support and promote black writers.
