Feel Good Spaces by Sherry Burton Ways

Feel Good Spaces was written with the stressed and depressed person in mind, who yearns for an environment that escapes them from their daily routine. That place, be it home or office, is visually beautiful, but more importantly it rejuvenates the body, mind, and spirit to awaken positive energy. “Everybody’s Feel Good Space will be different, but they will all have that ‘home’ feeling, and a feeling of warmth and acceptance for the person who inhabits it. It will provide a relaxing moment in time that takes the person back to themselves, elevates their mood, and empowers them for the rest of their life,” says Burton Ways. Burton Ways credits Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Wayne. Dyer, Marianne Williamson, and Sanaya Roman for inspiring her to create spaces that comes from a deeper place. Burton Ways presents design concepts from which the reader can personally explore colors, fabrics, scents, and tastes that will appeal to their feelings.

Excerpt:

As I began my personal journey in creating my own feel-good space, my friends and family would react to my new  home, and ask me why I put this color together with that color, or where I had picked up this or that piece.  I felt so strong and empowered by all the positive feedback that I decided to take classes in interior design. I considered that my entire professional self-identity should shift. I felt elated.

Concurrently, I was a member of a spiritual community that encouraged learning about metaphysics, universal law, and living holistically.  I was reading New Thought authors such as Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Marianne Williamson and others. I was learning how to manage my life, not from a point of being reactionary, but from a point of living peacefully and abundantly.

I was introduced to the ancient Chinese practice of arrangement called Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway). In addition, I began taking numerous courses both in Interior Design and Feng Shui to broaden and expand my professional foundation.

I was always very drawn to color.  Color is so essential in evoking a feeling.   I wanted to know about the healing aspects of color and how I could use it therapeutically while creating interiors for my clients.  I learned from well known color experts how to utilize and maximize the healing qualities of color, and I began to combine this knowledge with interior design and Feng Shui to create spaces for my clients they had never imagined.  Now through this book, I want to share some of my secrets with you so you can create your own feel-good space.

To make this book user friendly, informative, and fun, I have combined exercises, my experiences working with clients, and research to help you visualize what you may want in your own space.  You really can create your very own feel-good space whether it is in your home, office or both.

You may not consider yourself a creative person, but you do know when you feel good, and when you’re in a space that is inviting and nurturing for you.  Combine that with the progressive theories and ancient systems in this book, and you are on your way to making your space more organic, intuitive, and comforting for you, and to all others who enter it.

Everybody’s Feel-Good Space will be different, but they will all have that “home” feeling, a feeling of warmth and acceptance, for the person who inhabits it.  It will provide a relaxing moment in time that takes the person back to themselves elevate their mood and empowers them for the rest of their life.

2.   Congratulations on the publication of your book, “Feel Good Spaces: A Guide to Decorating Your Home for Body, Mind, and Spirit.” What inspired you to write the book?

Sherry:  I was inspired by a former client who I worked with who was about to retire.  She kept stating that she wanted her space to “feel good”.  In addition, in the many workshops and lectures I have given, I get so many questions about creating peaceful spaces. So, I  wrote this book to provide to the world my eight years of experience creating homes that are nurturing and peaceful for my clients. In this book, I provide questions, suggestions, and exercises designed to help the reader create an environment that brings peace, joy, balance and comfort, while also providing a refuge from the stresses of the outside world.

3. Can you tell us a little about your work–what makes your design concept special?

Sherry:  The book Feel Good Spaces explains how environments are an extension of the soul and provides vibrant photos, client case studies, and do-it-yourself exercises to help readers create their own feel-good environments—at home or office. Feel Good Spaces was written with the stressed and depressed person in mind, who yearns for an environment that escapes them from their daily routine. 5.  It’s such a beautiful book! Can you tell us a bit about how you went about designing it? Did you do it yourself or have someone do it for you?

Sherry:  Yes, I collaboratively designed the book with my publisher Wealthy Sistas Publishing House.  I chose the photograph for the cover.  The publisher did the rest regarding the font selection for the title and cover.
