For Better and Worse an excerpt;
Joshua and January took their drinks and sat down in the living room. January turned on the TV and gave Joshua the remote. He went straight to ESPN. They talked about the basketball season and the upcoming football season. Joshua was impressed with January’s knowledge of sports.
“You want another Miller High Life?” January asked, looking at the empty one in his hand.
“If you don’t mind,” he said.
They talked about the robbery and how coincidental it was that they were both there.
“How will you get your car tomorrow?” Joshua asked.
“Probably get Danielle to take me.”
Joshua’s face twisted, making January laugh again. “You know, you really shouldn’t be that way,” she said.
“That’s coming from someone on the outside looking in.”
A few hours passed with them watching ESPN and talking about the robbery some more. January grabbed Joshua another beer. When January got the remote in her hands, she flipped to the Lifetime Movie Network.
“Oh, you about to put me to sleep,” he said.
And that is exactly what happened.
When Joshua woke up, he was still sitting on January’s couch in an upright position. It was dark, and for a minute, he forgot where he was.
Sitting on his right, January said, “Well, look who’s awake.”
Joshua’s head fell back. “I told you, you would put me to sleep with that movie. What was the name of it, My Husband’s Daughter or something?”
“Wow, he remembers the name of the movie,” she said.
He yawned, throwing his arms out to stretch. “What time is it?”
“Twelve thirty-two.”
“A.M.?” he yelled.
“Yep,” she responded.
Joshua fumbled for his phone, patting down his pockets.
“Can you turn on a light?” he asked.
January reached for the lamp on the end table and turned the switch. Joshua dug into the sides of the couch and found his phone. On his screen displayed three missed calls and two text messages. He flipped open his phone. One missed call from Dantae and two from Victoria. He cursed. The first text message from Victoria read: Hey babe, I’m trying to call you. The next one read: Call me when you get this message.
“I’ve got to go,” he said.
January stood up and stepped in front of him. For the first time, Joshua noticed what she was wearing. January pulled back her housecoat to reveal a black and red see through teddy. She placed her hands on her hip, daring him to leave. It had been a long time since January had a man in her home. It was very lonely most nights, and knowing she was wrong, she still couldn’t miss the opportunity before her.
Joshua’s eyes roamed from the top of her breasts to the see through red panties. The black straps connected her stockings to her thong. January had taken her hair down. Earlier, it was tied up on top of her head, and now her cinnamon brown hair lay on her shoulders. From this angle, Joshua was even more surprised by her thickness. That Weight Watchers had worked better for her than for Jennifer Hudson.
There were no words between them. Joshua was digging deep to find the courage to refuse her offer, but the more he watched her, the more weakened his flesh became.
“You’re beautiful, and I’m flattered …” He closed his eyes and scooted to the edge of the sofa, getting ready to stand. “I can’t go there with you, January.”
“Why, because of your girl or your ex?” she asked.
“Both,” he said.
January placed herself between his legs. “What, I’m not your type? Do I need to lose more weight?”
“I thought you didn’t keep secrets from yo girl. Do you plan to tell her you’re trying to seduce me?” Joshua asked.
January let out a cynical laugh. She leaned into him and her breast pushed against his mouth. She smelled like vanilla sugar. “Your secret is safe with me. Remember, I’m your friend too,” she said.
Joshua grabbed her and stood, picking her up. An electric current ran through their flesh an erotic sensation settling between them. January wrapped her long legs around him and held the sides of his face. Joshua kissed her cleavage, completely overtaken by desire. January let out subtle moans and pulled his face to hers. They kissed passionately as Joshua turned with her in his hands and walked to the bedroom. He bumped into a dresser, trying to navigate in the dark unknown environment.
He lay January on the bottom of the bed and stood. Before he had time to think, she undressed him. Taking off his polo, her hands massaged his chest. He’s built Ford tough, she said to herself. Reaching down, she unfastened his belt and pulled down his shorts.
“You can have whatever you want,” she said.
This woman was impossible to resist.
